Dear Appalachia,
The phrase, “economic diversification” can be confusing, intimidating and even scary at times.
We hear your concerns, and we understand that change can be met with skepticism.
But let us ask you this: How much longer can we afford to cling to the status quo? How many more generations will have to struggle to make ends meet while we wait for a savior to magically rescue our economy?
Appalachia is indeed sitting on a gold mine, and that gold mine is the film industry.
We are not proposing a pipe dream or some distant fantasy; we are talking about real, tangible opportunities for growth, creativity, and prosperity. And that opportunity is here, due in large part to the Film Tax Credit.
Last year, our elected leaders successfully passed one of the most robust and competitive film production tax incentives in the United States. Since implementation, nearly 90 productions have been active in the Mountain State. That number will surely grow as word gets out that the Mountain State is open for business when it comes to the film industry.
And we are well aware what happens when the film industry is thriving.
All you have to do is look to states near us.
The film industry gives North Carolina a yearly economic boost to the tune of $300 million.
Pennsylvania receives roughly $100 million.
George rakes in a staggering $4.4billion annually now.
The film industry is a massive economic injection wherever it is allowed to grow.
But we need to embrace and help foster this new industry.
Here in West Virginia, we have witnessed hundreds of millions of dollars being poured into this region in the name of diversification, yielding little progress.
Film Futures Foundation is different.
We are not offering empty promises or temporary solutions. We are empowering individuals in our communities to tell their own stories and create their own destinies. We are nurturing a generation of filmmakers who will put Appalachia on the global map and attract investment, jobs, and opportunities that have been elusive for far too long.
More importantly, we are training up a workforce to fill a new demand for real job opportunities in this industry.
Yes, we know that not all programs and trainings have succeeded in providing a livable wage. That is precisely why we exist – to change that narrative and create a pathway to economic prosperity that is sustainable and inclusive.
The film industry is not just about Hollywood glamour; it’s about building a skilled and diverse workforce, creating local businesses, and showcasing the beauty of our region to the world.
It is easy to criticize and resist change, but imagine the possibilities if we all joined hands and supported each other. We are not asking for a handout; we are asking for a chance to build something great together.
To those elected officials, community leaders, academicians, and entrepreneurs who hesitate, we urge you to look beyond your doubts and fears.
Let’s have a genuine conversation.
If we truly want to diversify our economy and create a brighter future for Appalachia, we must embrace innovation and think beyond the traditional. The film industry is the catalyst we have been waiting for – an opportunity to rewrite our story and define our own destiny.
To our friends, family, and neighbors who are wary, I ask you to have faith in the potential of our region. Instead of holding back, let’s rise up and embrace this opportunity with open arms. Together, we can build something extraordinary.
Appalachia’s time is now.
Let’s show the world what we are capable of. Join us in supporting Film Futures Foundation and be part of the change we all want to see.
Sincerely,
The Film Futures Foundation Team
